The winner of the first Val Wood Prize for Creative Writing was announced last Sunday at a special event organised as part of this year’s Beverley Literature Festival.
Best-selling Beverley author Val Wood launched the competition to celebrate the 20th anniversary of her award winning novel The Hungry Tide.
Residents from the East Riding were invited to enter and over one hundred entries were submitted for the competition.
Val said: “I am thrilled to say that we were inundated with competition entries from all over the region.
“It was a real pleasure to read through them all. Some were sad and poignant, some that made me laugh. Everybody had a tale to tell, but we found the eventual outstanding winner.”
Sharon Burton of Kingswood, Hull was announced the winner at a special ceremony at Toll Gavel Church in Beverley.
She said: “This is the first time I have written anything for pleasure or for publication and I am extremely surprised I won, but also very pleased.”
The winner was awarded £100 first prize provided by Quickline Communications, who sponsored the event.
