CHRISTINA Coates from Beverley was presented with the prestigious RYA North East Region Young Sailor of the Year Award 2012 at the Tullett Prebon London International Boat Show on Saturday.

She was voted RYA North East Regional Young Sailor of the Year 2012 last autumn for her windsurfing achievements.

Christina is a regular competitor in the RYA Team15 Inter-Club Championship and was part of the North Zone Championship winning Pugneys Pirates team in 2012.

“I’m very proud to have been chosen to represent the region and the club,” she said.

“Combining school and windsurfing is really difficult but with the help of my parents I have managed so far.

“I am beginning science A-Levels next year and I also hope to become a full windsurfing instructor.

“I am booked in for my powerboat Level Two course five days after my 16th birthday in March.”

Christina was amongst thirteen RYA Regional Young Sailor of the Year winners who are nominated by RYA affiliated sailing clubs.

The young sailors have made a significant impact on youth sailing, ranging from gold medal winning achievements and overcoming adversity, to the huge amount of hard work and effort they give back to their clubs.

The awards were presented by Bob Fisher, Chairman of the Yachting Journalists Association.

Christina and her family were treated to an action packed VIP day at the show, thanks to Pantaenius Yacht Insurance.
