Keeper denies Whitestar

Have your say

Beverley Whitestar FC 2

AFC Cottingham 3

AFTER seven weeks without a game, Whitestar finally got back to some football.

Both teams started off determined to get their league hopes back on track and after 20 minutes, Danny Gibson struck first for Whitestar.

This initially put Cottingham’s heads down, but with no goal to follow, as time went on Cottingham got the spirit back and started matching Whitestar kick for kick.

Both teams had a number of chances with Whitsestar taking the upper hand. However the Cottingham keeper was in top form and denied a series of attacks that should have seen Whitestar out of reach.

These missed opportunities were made worse when Cottingham slotted home an equaliser just before the break.

The second half started where the first had left off and it was Cottingham, with a never-say-die attitude, who got their second.

Shortly after the restart, a Whitestar attack was halted in the 18 yard box, resulting in a penalty.

What looked like Whitestar’s chance to beat the on form keeper unchallenged and get the equaliser, soon turned to disappointment as the ball was placed just over the bar.

This spurred Cottingham on and not long after, a third was scored.

Whitestar kept taking every chance they had to pressure the Cottingham goal and were eventually rewarded when a goalmouth scramble ended with Matty Williamson heading the ball downwards and a mistake from the keeper, saw the ball trickle over the line.

The dying minutes were played out with Whitstar in the Cottingham half looking for the equaliser.

At the final whistle, Cottingham had held on and took the points.

Whitestar’s performance was a little rusty, but after a seven-week lay-off, was never going to be highly polished.

A great effort from Whitestar with no reward and thanks must go to the Ref and AFC Cottingham for providing a well contested game of football.

Whitestar’s next game is on Sunday away to Cavalier Athletic at Ennerdale.
