Football fans are split over Dean Saunders managerial credentials.

The former Welsh international agreed to become the new boss of Wolverhampton Wanderers last night.

Having failed to keep Doncaster Rovers in the Championship last season after succeeding Sean O’Driscoll, Saunders has steered the club into second position in League One, level on points with table-topping Tranmere Rovers.

Ex-Barnsley player Geoff Thomas, a former teammate of Saunders at Nottingham Forest, says Wolves are making a shrewd appointment.

“Dean has a good footballing brain and he is a great character,” he posted on Twitter. “He’s done his apprenticeship.”

Tom Scott echoed his sentiments, saying: “Why are people convinced Dean Saunders won’t do well at Wolves? I think he is obviously a good manager and has every chance to do well there.”

But ex-Sheffield United striker Saunders divides opinion on the terraces. Wolves supporter Roger Johnson said: “I hope Dean turns us down. I really don’t want him at all.”

Wyn Jones also waded into the debate, saying: “Time for Dean to show some loyalty and stay at Rover. Still to prove himself. Fell into system at WrexhamFC. Almost sorry for new signing Lee Fowler.”

Wolves sacked Stale Solbakken on Saturday night in the wake of their FA Cup third-round exit to non-league Luton.

Chris Vickers said: “Solbakken sacked...so let’s bring in Dean Saunders; well that’s going be a step in the right direction #NOT.”
