SHEFFIELD UNITED: Tough treatment as Dave Kitson targets comeback

SHEFFIELD United’s Dave Kitson has embarked upon a week of intensive treatment as the striker attempts to declare himself fit for Saturday’s League One encounter with Stevenage.

Kitson has been absent for the past four matches after suffering a grade one hamstring tear during last month’s victory over Walsall.

However, after travelling with the rest of Danny Wilson’s squad to recent games against Swindon Town and MK Dons, the 32-year-old is understood to be hopeful of featuring against the visitors from Hertfordshire.

Wilson, whose team has been blighted by similar injuries, recently struck a note of caution about expecting too much too soon from Kitson following his fine start to life at Bramall Lane.

“Dave’s injury, all injuries of this nature, are very delicate,” Wilson said. “You don’t want to push people too hard for fear the thing might ‘go’ again. You just keep stretching them a little bit more as the days go by and then see how they get on.”

United fear they could also be without defenders Tony McMahon and Matt Hill as they look to remain second in the table.

Both also damaged hamstrings during the controversial defeat at Stadium mk four days ago, although the South Yorkshire club were last night remaining tightlipped about the results of their scans.

Stevenage will journey north in third despite being beaten 4-1 by Preston North End.

They are embroiled in a contract dispute with Robin Shroot but the 24-year-old returned to the squad following a brief absence against the the visitors from Deepdale.

Stevenage chairman Phil Wallace has offered Shroot a new deal but the midfielder has indicated he is concerned about a lack of first-team opportunities.

“We have been in conversations with Robin for several weeks about a new deal as his contract ends in six months or so,” Wallace said.

“Robin has said he’s not sure he wants to commit himself to Stevenage past this present season.”
