DONCASTER ROVERS: ‘We’re going for big prize and won’t be distracted’
JOHN Ryan got his wish for a swift conclusion to Wolves’ pursuit of Dean Saunders - and already had ‘Plan B’ at the ready.
Rovers’ chairman said he was toasting Saturday’s 1-0 win against Colchester with a glass of wine when he got the call from Wolves chairman Steve Morgan.
Doncaster officially gave permission yesterday morning for the Midlands club to speak to Saunders about replacing Stale Solbakken. Ryan said: “Obviously Wolves are a massive club and it was difficult for us. Dean has been loyal to us, we’ve worked closely with him and have tried to give him all the tools we can.
“But Wolves have huge potential. We’ve been in this position before with Sean O’Driscoll and Burnley and Sheffield United.
“But Dean built his own team here and they’ve been doing very well. It will have been a hard decision for him.
“But we’re going for a big prize and we don’t want to be distracted.”
Rovers went joint top of League One after victory against Colchester, but in the immediate aftermath of the game Wolves’ interest in Saunders quickly became apparent, leading to a formal approach. “It’s not the best timing but it never is. That’s football,” said Ryan.
“We always have a Plan B. Whoever you pick you get criticised, but I think our judgement has been pretty good in the past.”
