A depleted Scarborough Ladies Under-13s battled throughout despite a 10-2 loss at home to high-flying Brayton.

Without their goalkeeper or any substitutes, the hosts were always up against it against a much stronger and experienced Brayton, who led 6-0 at the break despite Boro going close on several occasions.

After the interval, Brayton continued to fire in the goals, but the last 20 minutes of the match saw a visibly tired Boro side pull a goal back through Ruby Carney after a superb run from Ellie-Mae Bloomfield.

Striker Bloomfield then got on the scoresheet herself with a neat turn followed by a strong run and powerful shot as the game ended 10-2.

Boss Andy Hutchings said: “Ava Hutchings got the player of the match award.

“We started off well, playing in triangles with good passing, there were half-a-dozen solo driving runs from Ellie-Mae Bloomfield, who formed a good strike pairing with Kaci Smith.

“We got caught on the break too often and the scoreline flattered the opposing team but it was a good all-round effort without any subs.”

Scarborough started well and showed no signs of rustiness from the lockdown break, immediately pinning the Poppleton team in their own half, forcing some desperate defending and excellent saves to keep the score level in what was one-way traffic.

Boro eventually took a deserved lead midway through the first half with a great goal from striker Kelsie McGough, who shot from the edge of the box after a well-worked corner.

Scarborough scored again just before half-time with a fine team goal.

Phoebe Philps won the ball in midfield, feeding a pass to striker Lucy Fairbank, who beat her marker and whipped in a pin-point cross to Sarah Brennan, whose first-time touch took her past the away defence before she coolly slotted into the bottom corner.

The second half continued with Scarborough on top, but Poppleton pulled a goal back with a long-range effort after a rare venture into the Scarborough half to make the score 2-1.

Scarborough nerves remained calm with the home team continuing to create chances, one of which was taken by McGough for her second of the match, making the final score 3-1.

Every single Scarborough player put in a fantastic performance, displaying pride, determination and teamwork beyond their years.
