BEVERLEY'S big two-year-old contests this week saw wildly contrasting results.
Warthill trainer Mel Brittain sprang a big surprise in the Listed Hilary Needler Trophy on Wednesday as his 40-1 outsider Knavesmire and stablemate Caranbola finished first and second.

But Able Master justified confidence in him by landing the Bri
an Yeardley Continental Two Year Old Trophy at the track’s Saturday afternoon meeting.

Punters at the Westwood’s first evening meeting of the season were left counting their losses as the field went without favourite Perculator, who reared up in the stalls before the start.

But former champion jockey Ryan Moore did his bit to keep favourite backers in the crowd happy with a double aboard two odds-on market leaders.

First, Corrybrough justified a 1-2 price by beating Hammadi in the main support race, the Class Three Beverley Racecourse Conditions Stakes.

Then Moore teamed up with Lindelaan, a rare Sir Michael Stoute runner on the Westwood, to claim the closing maiden fillies contest.

And Just Lille made it a hat-trick of winning favourites when just getting up late in the Weatherbys Bloodstock Insurance Handicap.

Another rider who enjoyed a productive evening was Dean McKeown, who rode each of the first two winners on the card.

Princess Lomi was too strong for the rest in the opening Supabed Quality Paper Bedding Handicap. And 14-1 shot Shadowtime clung on by a nose to beat Smooth As Silk by a nose in the Guest and Philips Handicap.

The result of Wednesday’s feature was a contrast to the colts’ contest for the Brian Yeardley trophy at the weekend.

The Bryan Smart trained Able Master was sent off the 11/10 favourite under Royston Ffrench and managed to hold off the challenge of Kingswinford by a head.

The same trainer and jockey combination had earlier found themselves out of luck in the main support race, the Class Two Joyce and Keith Saunders Conditions Stakes, when Aegean Dancer was beaten into second by Look Busy.

Meanwhile, jockey Richard Mullen enjoyed a productive afternoon, riding two winners on the card. He steered Mujood home in the older horses’ contest over the extended seven furlongs, before partnering Billy One Punch to success in the Beverley Electric Stakes.

Elsewhere, Officer Mor went one better than on his debut racecourse appearance at Hamilton to win the opening two-year-old maiden contest.

The Brantingham Stayers Handicap went to top weight Mister Arjay, who made all the running under Tony Hamilton and eventually went on to score by one and three quarter lengths.

And 5/2 joint favourite Active Asset ensured the Hull City fans in the crowd who backed him had even more to celebrate that their Wembley triumph as he claimed the closing lady riders’ contest by seven lengths.

Beverley’s next meeting takes place on Wednesday June 11, with the first race at 2.20pm.
