Youngsters go coast-to-coast
FOUR schoolfriends from Beverley are setting off on a coast to coast walk across Britain, raising money for a cancer charity.
Beverley High School student Katie Malton and Beverley Grammar School pupils Tom Oldridge, Jack Selman and James Brown will set off on Monday on a seven-day journey which will take them from Carlisle in the west to Newcastle in the east.
The youngsters, all aged 16, will walk around 70 miles, following the route of Hadrian’s Wall, raising money for Macmillan Cancer Support.
They have planned the journey themselves and plan to camp out along the route. The four are hoping to raise at least 500 for the charity, boosted with support from their schools.
Jack explained that the idea for tackling the walk had sprung from discussions about what they should do during the summer holidays.
He said his mum had undergone treatment for kidney cancer, and other people they knew had also suffered from different forms of cancer.
“We have seen friends in school who had had cancer and we thought this was the most suitable way of helping not only the victims of cancer but also their families who get to benefit from Macmillan,” he said.
“I was going over some ideas with my mum and James had said a few weeks ago that we should do a long walk. We decided to walk along Hadrian’s Wall which is an historic site as well as going across the country so we won’t be able to get lost.”
The four friends have already undertaken some shorter walks to train for their marathon attempt, and all keep fit with gym workouts. Jack, Katie and Tom all live in Beverley while James lives in nearby Etton.
