Wheelchair users course invitation
YOUNG wheelchair users in the Beverley area are being invited to a free wheelchair mobility training course.
The course will be held by the Association of Wheelchair Children (AWC) a specialist national charity which provides expert training and advice to wheelchair-using children and their families across the UK.
It teaches children useful practical skills, enabling them to assess risks and move safely and confidently around their homes and neighbourhoods.
The course, which is open to all young wheelchair users in the region, will be held at Longcroft School in Beverley on Saturday and Sunday February 2 and 3, from 9.30am to 3pm.
Youngsters will be taught skills such as back wheel balancing, so that they can go up and down kerbs independently, and also play games such as wheelchair basketball.
Therapy manager Roy Wild said the course will even look at how to go down a flight of stairs in a wheelchair. Extra chairs are so provided so that mums, dads and sibllings can get involved and join in the games.
The charity’s patron is TV personality Ade Adeptian, who performed the wheelchair dance sequence on BBC and has featured in several TV programmes including Beyond Boundaries, Holiday and Desperados.
Ade, who was also an ambassador for London’s 2012 Olympic bid and played wheelchair basketball in the England team, was one of the first young wheelchair users to take part in one of the AWC courses.
Mr Wild said that children as young as two years old have taken part in the courses, which are aimed at youngsters up to the age of 18.
Young wheelchair users are welcome to turn up to the course in Beverley, but it would be helpful if
they could ring Mr Wild, tel (01482) 887163 to let him know if they plan to attend.
