Voting to keep weekly green bin collection
TWO thirds of the residents who have already responded to East Riding Council's waste and recycling survey are calling for the weekly collection of the green bin to continue.
Up to 6,000 residents have already taken part in the consultation, which runs until July 31. Of these, 67 per cent have voted for option three, the council's favoured option, which provides for the continued weekly collection of the green bin.
Residents taking part in the survey are asked to choose from four options.
Option one proposes no change to the current service, based on the green bin for non-recyclable wastes and the blue bin for paper, plastic bottles and cans; option two is based on the current green and blue bins but with the addition of a brown bin for garden waste for all East Riding households; option three provides residents with a weekly collection of non-recyclables in their green bin, a fortnightly collection of the blue bin with cardboard added, and a fortnightly collection of garden waste in the brown bin; option four would establish fortnightly collections of all three bins.
The council is encouraging residents to recycle and compost 45pc of their waste by 2010. Failure to achieve Government targets could result in council tax having to be used to pay fines and penalties of up to 27m by 2018.
