THE ARMY Cadet Force (ACF) in Humberside and South Yorkshire is urgently seeking more adult volunteers to support the region’s 1,700 cadets.

As new cadets continue to sign up, the association’s adult instructors are struggling to keep up with demand and are calling for men and women over the age of 18 to consider volunteering at their local detachment.

The cadet detachments in Beverley are two of 52 across Humberside and South Yorkshire urgently requiring support to ensure the cadets from the surrounding area can continue to enjoy weekend camps, adventurous training and parade evenings, in addition to earning qualifications and awards.

Corporal Jack Wilson-Spencer, 16, from Beverley Grammar School detachment, said: “I love every minute of being a cadet. The ACF is a great place to make new friends, develop skills and enjoy experiences that many other people my age rarely get the chance to do.

“But the whole unit can only exist if we continue to have enough adult volunteers. Without them, we will struggle to be able to provide high-quality training and opportunities for other cadets like me.”

Sergeant Instructor Emma Asquith, also from the detachment, said: “Being an adult instructor in the ACF is enormously rewarding and a great privilege. Besides having the opportunity to play a leading role in the development of young people, it’s also a terrific way to take part in a range of exciting military-orientated pursuits – from training weekends and summer camp holidays, to white-water rafting and rock climbing.”

Colonel David Fuller OBE, Commandant of Humberside and South Yorkshire ACF added: “The ACF is one of the most prestigious youth organisations in the country. Its popularity means we need more adult instructors to lead the cadets and deliver the quality of experiences, adventures and community projects - including the Duke of Edinburgh award - which our cadets enjoy.

“You don’t need any military experience to become an instructor and you can even gain qualifications that will help you in your workplace. We’d love to hear from people who are willing to offer their time and enthusiasm to join our ranks as an adult instructor.”

In a recent survey commissioned by the Reserve Forces’ and Cadets’ Association (RFCA) in Yorkshire and the Humber, it was revealed that 100 per cent of current ACF adult instructors would recommend it to others.

Volunteering has provided life-long memories for many of the instructors, including helping to steer troubled teenagers in a totally new direction, seeing them achieve great things, garden parties at Buckingham Palace, and leading their unit to win best detachment in the county.
