Former David Lister student Ben Foster has completed his initial Retained Duty System (RDS) recruit training with Humberside Fire and Rescue Service and is looking forward to starting his two year firefighter apprenticeship as part of green watch at Tata Steel in Scunthorpe. Ben passed out just before Christmas after the 12 week course which covered all aspects of firefighting, such as breathing apparatus training and working at heights.
Ben initially completed a six week BTEC Award programme funded by Job Centre Plus for NEETS (not in education, employment or training) held at Clough Road Fire Station. Ben was then selected to move onto the ‘Certificate Level’ for a further 12 weeks, during which he was named ‘recruit of the course’.
The six new recruits gave a demonstration of RTC extrication techniques on the training ground to senior officers, families and friends before receiving their awards from Deputy Chief Fire Officer Dene Sanders.
