Team Age UK East Riding successfully completed its charitable cycle ride to Ypres and back.
All 13 riders in the Team completed the 135 miles and so far, their efforts have raised around £20,000 that is to be donated to Age UK East Riding to help fund its much in demand charitable services for older and vulnerable East Riding residents.
With the assistance of 5 Team supporters, the 13 cyclists (with an average age of 58) battled in temperatures of around 30 degrees over 73 miles on Monday to reach Ypres from Zeebrugge in time to get a quick shower and change before attending the Last Post Ceremony at the Menin Gate at 8pm that evening. Team members Christopher Oughtred, Tina Cerutti and John Senior laid wreaths and crosses during the ceremony, remembering those from the East Yorkshire Regiment who had fought and died in the battles there during the First World War.
The following day’s cycle route back to Zeebrugge was slightly shorter than the previous days and an eleven mile stretch of cycle track along a largely tarmacked disused railway line, with a gentle breeze behind them helped the Team to forget some of the aches and pains of Monday’s exertions.
Everyone was pleased to arrive back at the Port of Hull on Wednesday morning and all agreed that it had been a most enjoyable and moving experience. Most fortunately, there were no punctures and only one minor accident that left a couple of cuts and a bruised knee for one rider who soon got back into the saddle! A couple of near misses – one cyclist took on a lorry and another got her wheel stuck in a tram rail just when a tram was approaching – but we were all able to laugh about it afterwards.
Team Age UK East Riding thanks everyone who has kindly donated to the event so far and encourages others to make a donation and help its efforts to reach its £30,000 target. This can be done by sending a cheque, made payable to ‘Age UK East Riding’ to The Finance Officer, Age UK East Riding, 16 North Bar Within, Beverley, HU17 8AX, and remember that the value of any donation may be increased if you are able to make a declaration for Gift Aid - just call on (01482 869181) and ask for a Gift Aid form. Alternatively, donations can be made online (via the Charity’s website www.ageuk.org.uk/eastriding ).
