Sovereign sales soar
Dee Atkinson and Harrison’s early autumn Antique and Fine Art Auction began with a smaller than usual silver section of less than 50 lots but demand was still strong from both the room and the internet.
A 1930’s three piece tea set sold for £540, an early 19th Century salver £460 and a 1920’s dressing table tray £220.
An Edwardian match case by Asprey and Co realised well above estimate at £170.
Gold coins continue to sell well with sovereigns making between £200 and £230 and half sovereigns £105 to £110.
A gold bracelet of four sovereigns sold for £1150.
Old metalware preformed as expected. A novelty table lighter in the form of a pheasant made £120 and the same price was achieved for a copper water cistern reputedly removed from the British Ambassador’s residence in the Bahamas.
The miscellaneous section saw a pair of Georgian mahogany knife boxes make a triple estimate £750 and an 18ct fountain pen by The Lincoln Pen Company realised £1350.
In the traditional ceramics a pair of Burmantofts vases sold for £350 while a 19th Century Swansea plate, identified by David Battie on the BBC Antiques Roadshow at Bridlington made £350.
A larger than average glass section contained two lots of Victorian Burmese glass which totalled £500.
Ivories dominated the objets d’art lots with a Chinese figure of Guan Yin, thought to be 17th Century, selling for £1700 and other Chinese carvings £200 to £480. Three un-worked whales teeth, sold with a whale’s eardrum, made £280.
Clocks and instruments saw another surprising price with an early 20th Century combined collection box and barometer for the Shipwrecked Fishermen and Mariners Royal Benevolent Society achieving a six times estimate £850.
Furniture buyers were very selective with highest prices being paid for a 20th Century Japanese Shodana cabinet at £1300.
Local artists and views dominated the pictures section starting with an engraving of a coach and horses near Burton Constable Hall at £120. An Albert Goodwin watercolour of Whitby harbour sold for £600 and a Walter Goodin view of Bridlington harbour £580. Two oil paintings by Frederick William Elwell, a still life of flowers at £3900 and a continental street market scene in Cahors France at £4000 concluded the sale.
