North Wolds Lions charity has sent out a Save Our Sleigh message.

After 29 years of running its popular Santa Sleigh tours of Wolds villages raising more than £60,000 for local causes this year’s event is under threat.

The trailer on which Santa and his sleigh are mounted is on its last legs and no longer safe to use.

Keith Harris, North Wolds Lion’s President, said: “After 29 years of winter weather it has started to collapse. To buy a new one would cost around £2,000 so we are appealing for anyone who might have a trailer, around 12 feet long by six feet wide with low sides, they could let us have to get in touch. It could we could maybe borrow it or even be able to pay something toward it. We would consider any option to help us continue the service.”

It was originally made by a Lions member, a year after the club was founded, from an old caravan chassis, which itself was probably 20 years old. Apart from one winter when the weather defeated them it has been a familiar feature of Wolds Christmasses ever since. It spends most of the year under cover on a farm owned by Lion’s secretary Mike Sellers at Low Cathorpe and nowadays starts its festive programme in October to mark the opening of Santa’s Grotto at Eastfield Garden Centre in Bridlington.

“It is only on ther road for a few days up to Christmas but that is usually during the worst winter weather,” said Keith.

If anyone knows of a trailer which might be suitable, they are asked to contact Keith, club President on 01377 254172 or Mike the club secretary on 01262 420237
