SHEPHERDS CROOKS AND WALKING STICKS
A course about making walking sticks and shepherd's crooks, run by Brian Bate, community sports coach and outdoor activity instructor, is being offered by East Riding of Yorkshire Council.
These courses have been running since September 2009 and have proved popular.
Brian has been making walking sticks and shepherds crooks in Leicestershire for many years. He has now moved to the East Riding and is offering to teach the craft to people here.
This course has proved extremely popular with some wonderful sticks being made by the course participants.
Those taking part can make their own crook or stick from traditional materials. Handles can be made from antler or a selection of hard woods and the shanks will be made from hazel or blackthorn.
Participants will be taught techniques such as carving the handles, shank straightening jointing methods and how to fit a ferrule. All tools and materials supplied.
Dates currently planned for the courses are 17 April, 19 June, 18 September and 11 December 2010.
All courses will be held at Longcroft school in Beverley from 9.30am until 4.30pm.
Tickets cost 50 per person and early booking is essential.
Details and bookings are available from Brian Bate at Brian.Bate@eastriding.gov.uk or 07899 994 830
