Second Sheffield service for murdered organist

MEMBERS of another Sheffield church where murdered grandfather Alan Greaves volunteered have gathered for a service in his memory.

Mr Greaves, aged 68, was violently battered yards from his home on Christmas Eve while walking to play the organ at St Saviours C of E Church in High Green, and died from his injuries in hospital.

As well as helping at St Saviours, Mr Greaves also played the keyboard for St Paul’s Church on Wordsworth Avenue, Parson Cross, helping to run an after-school group called Paul’s Praise along with his wife, Maureen.

A warden at the church said members were ‘devastated’.

“People are so heartbroken about what’s happened,” said the woman, who didn’t want to be named.

“I couldn’t believe it at first. He was a very inoffensive and gentle man. Alan and Maureen were such a devoted couple, they never went anywhere without one another.”

Dozens of people turned out for a service of remembrance at St Paul’s on Sunday, led by the Reverend Keith Crookes.

“It was a lovely service and very comforting,” said the warden.

“This has hit us hard.”
