Redevelopment plans on show

A public preview of the proposed commercial redevelopment of Flemingate in Beverley is to be held at the Beverley Arms Hotel today, from noon until 7.30pm.

The public will have an opportunity to view the proposals at first hand and talk to members of the team behind the eagerly-awaited commercial element of the £120m regeneration scheme, which includes the new home of the Beverley campus of the East Riding College.

In addition to the retail, the new Flemingate will provide an 80-bed hotel, a five-screen cinema complex, restaurants, first-class office accommodation, a 486-space multi-storey car park and a community hall, which will be gifted to the town.

The development will transform a former industrial area into a vibrant shopping and business centre, enhancing Beverley’s reputation as a retail and tourism destination. Nearly 700 jobs will be created by the scheme, in addition to the 320 jobs created during the construction phase.

A spokesman for the consortium said: “The feedback from our meetings with the various Beverley-based groups has been positive and constructive. We are therefore looking forward to presenting our plans in detail to the public and other business owners.

“The style and size of the shop units at the new Flemingate are very different to the existing core retail provision in Beverley. Currently, there are 221 retail units in the town centre but only seven are more than 5,000 sq.ft, all of which are successfully occupied.

“The new Flemingate scheme will offer a complementary proposal to the town centre where the average size of retail unit is 1,354 sq.ft. as compared to nearly 10,000 sq.ft. on the new Flemingate site.

“Our research shows that this is what Beverley needs and the regeneration of such a large slice of land so close to the Minster and the town centre will be good news for the local economy.

“With only 41p in every £1 of comparison goods being spent in Beverley from the catchment area, we are confident that our scheme will attract additional shoppers to the town, including many who currently travel much further afield for their goods, thereby increasing footfall, and consequently business, for existing retailers.”

The preview event is part of the public consultation process organised by the development consortium, which consists of The Wykeland Group, C P Group Limited and Quintain Estates and Development plc. Presentations have already been made to the Beverley Civic Society, the Town Council, the Beverley Chamber of Trade and politicians.

The commercial site consists of just over 10 acres, previously occupied by the Museum of Army Transport and Clariant Chemicals and Hodgsons Tannery from the early 1800s. A further six acres has been set aside for residential development and housebuilding is already underway by Linden Homes.

Outline planning consent was granted in 2009 for a mixed-use retail-led scheme. A revised application will shortly be submitted to East Riding of Yorkshire Council.
