Puppet festival heads to town

With the biennial Beverley Puppet Festival close on the horizon, school children have started preparations for their Public Showcase and Town Centre Procession on Friday July 6, which will herald the largest Festival of British Puppetry in the World - the 5th Beverley Puppet Festival to be held the following weekend, July 13-15.

Thanks to support from East Riding of Yorkshire Council, a class of children from each of St.John of Beverley RC Primary School, Brandesburton Primary School and Longcroft School of Performing Arts have started a three day residency with each of the following local professionals: Anna Ingleby & Haviel Perdana of Indigo Moon Theatre, Liz Dorton of Wakey Wakey and Liz Dees of Apus Productions.

On Friday July 6 all three groups of school children will meet to showcase their work at Longcroft School, Burton Road at 1pm, followed by a Town Centre Procession leaving Longcroft at approximately 2.20pm.

The main Puppet Festival the following weekend, July 13 -15 is supported by National Lottery Funding through Arts Council England with further support from Beverley Town Council – as well as a lot of work in kind from the committee of Beverley Arts Trust and their team of trusty volunteers.

Puppet Festival Director for Beverley Arts Trust, Anna Ingleby said “The Education Project is an important element of the Beverley Puppet Festival … it enables children to use their hands, solve problems, think creatively and cover all manner of curricular targets while also boosting their confidence and having a whole lot of fun in celebrating the advent of this special Festival which only happens once every two years”.

The Festival itself the following weekend July 13th-15th involves 23 Professional Puppet Companies, all except one of which are British, and includes 22 ticketed events, 5 of which are Evening Comedy and/or Theatre Performances for Adults over 12+, and 59 free Outdoor performances. Tickets and brochures are available from Beverley TIC, 01482 391672 and information can be found on www.beverleyartstrust.co.uk and www.Facebook.com/BeverleyPuppetFestival2012
