Olympic medallists passing through in Tour of Britain

SPECTATORS in Beverley will be able to watch two British Olympic medallists in action when the Tour of Britain passes through the town next Thursday (September 11).

Hot on the heels of the cyclists’ success in the team pursuit contest in Beijing, Bradley Wiggins and Geraint Thomas will be riding for their respective professional teams, Team Columbia and Barloworld.

Olympic bronze medallist in the points race, Chris Newton, will also be in the Tour, leading the Rapha-Condor-Recycling.co.uk squad.

They will pass through Beverley town centre on their way to Bridlington in the Yorkshire and the Humber leg of the tour, which starts from 10.30am in Hull city centre. The route takes the cyclists over the Humber Bridge before returning to the East Riding, passing through Beverley and up to Bridlington before finishing in Dalby Forest.

The cyclists are expected to arrive in Beverley town centre a few minutes before 12 noon, taking just a few minutes to pass through the town via Victoria Road, Lairgate, North Bar, Wylies Road, and Norwood, heading out past Tickton towards the coast.

Councillor Jane Evison, the council’s portfolio holder for cultural services, housing and public protection, said: "We are delighted that East Riding will be hosting part of the Yorkshire and Humber leg of the Tour.

“As well as bringing cycling enthusiasts to the area, the event offers people the perfect opportunity to enjoy the scenic beauty and cultural heritage the region offers.

“It is also a wonderful opportunity to highlight the benefits of cycling related to raising fitness levels.”

She added: "We would encourage as many people as possible to support the Tour as it passes through the region.”

In Beverley, maps showing cycle routes through and around the town will be handed out during the event, as well as reflective stickers to help children stay safe on the roads.

The Tour starts on Sunday (September 7) in London and works its way around the country before finishing in Liverpool on September 14. Highlights of the tour will be televised each evening on ITV4 between 8 and 9pm.
