A funeral service was held at All Saints’ Church, Kilham on Thursday, 12 June for Mr Richard John Jennings of Kilham who died suddenly, but peacefully at home on 2 June. He was aged 91 years.

The service was conducted by the Rev Glyn Owen & the Rev Raymond Eveleigh & the organist was Mrs Sue Dawson.

Richard was born at home in Acton, Ealing on 5th July, 1922 in a bed made by his father which is still in the family.

He attended school at Seletians College, Battersea. He saw active service in the Second World War with the RAF in North Africa, Eritrea, Italy, Holland, France and Germany. He spent five years fighting for his country.

After being demobbed and starting work he married his sweetheart Josie who he had known since they were children, on the 7th April, 1951 at Burton Agnes Church. They had 63 happy married years together.

He diligently worked for the Daily Mail for his entire career until he retired at the age of 63. He spent his retirement years in his beloved Kilham. During retirement Josie and Richard travelled the world making many new friends as they went.

His other love was woodwork, he made things for the home and the church. In the church tower he made staithes for the bells, he made the lectern for his friend Stan. He was always happy when he was carving something in wood.

A real joy in his life was his five granddaughters and one grandson, he was always immensely interested in what they were doing and always ready with some helpful advice, they all have fond memories of their beloved grandfather.

He loved a family celebration and gathering round the table for Sunday lunches with family and friends, enjoying good company and excellent food and wine.

He will be greatly missed.
