A Beverley Labour campaigner is calling for a radical rethink of the Government’s HS2 high-speed rail project to benefit the north.
George McManus from Beverley Labour Group, says improving connectivity between Northern cities should be at the forefront of economic planning and the Yorkshire to Midlands link should be prioritised.
Mr McManus said: “Both Labour and the Tories have expressed a desire to see more power devolved to the North.
“We now need to look at how we get growth in the Northern regions which would benefit places like Hull, York and Leeds rather than see London suck more resources into the South East.”
Mr McManus believes that the building of the Leeds to Birmingham link would be less likely to be dogged by planning considerations and could be delivered earlier.
Mr McManus said this plan could bring real economic growth to the cities of Yorkshire.
