Organisers of a new fitness and boxing club which opened in Beverley last week have been overwhelmed by the positive response of residents to the project.

The Track Fitness and Boxing Club opened at the former gym at the Burden Road Youth Club last Friday during a special ceremony attended by Beverley MP Graham Stuart and Hull’s champion boxer Tommy ‘Boom Boom’ Coyle.

Called Track and Fitness because it aims to keep young people on the right track, the club offers more then just boxing.

Circuit training, boxercise and bench work are all available to young people and adults.

Philip Dodsworth, who set up the club with fellow professional boxing trainer Mike Pardoe, says they came up with the idea five years ago and it is a dream come true that the club is finally off the ground.

Mr Dodsworth said: “We’ve had this idea for ages to try and get a proper boxing club up and running. I sit on the Community Partnership Committee with Kerri Harold, and she’s been a real driving force behind the idea.

“We’ve had 30 young people, both boys and girls, come along so far and about 20 adults. I’m really pleased with the response it’s been phenomenal.

“In the future we would like to hold some amateur boxing nights but we need to walk before we can run.

“We have had great support from local businesses who have sponsored us and I’d like to thank them.”

The Track Fitness and Boxing Club is Beverley’s only boxing club and sessions take place on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

Councillor Kerri Harold, who has been involved in setting up the club added: “It’s an absolutely perfect facility for the club and it’s in just the right area.

“We’ve looked at a few different places but when we found out that the gym at the youth club might be available back in July we though it would be great.

“The council have been very supportive of the idea and in the first week we had 20 young people come along and that number is growing all the time.

“There are sessions for adults as well and we tried to keep if affordable, the children’s sessions are just 50p.”
