Three Driffield neighbours have proven their fingers are greener than most after scooping first prize in a housing association’s national gardening competition.
The award for Railway Housing Association’s annual Best Kept Garden Competition this year went to Derek and Janet Heslop, Charlie Galtress, and Sheila Cowton and her partner Michael Duggleby.
They beat off competition from residents across the UK to take the coveted title.
Derek, Janet, Charlie, Sheila and Michael submitted a joint entry as they share a garden in Wansford Road, Driffield. Their garden was chosen from a shortlist by the award sponsors/judges, Landscape Solutions.
Since moving into their homes in 2009, they estimate they have spent well over £1,000 and countless man/woman hours, improving their garden. For winning the competition they receive a trophy and a cheque for £50.
Derek explained: “Come rain or shine, there is always at least one of us outside working in the garden either planting, watering, digging or generally tidying.
“We are over the moon to win the competition and the garden can only get better with age, so hopefully we can win it again next year.”
Second prize went to Graham and Jean Ellis and their neighbour Sue Dunlin, who live in Kingston Road, Willerby, Hull.
Sue said: “We really enjoying gardening and although it can be hard work at times, especially when you are spending up to four hours deadheading plants and flowers, it is worth it when you see how nice your garden is.”
The judges also commended the garden of Liz Robinson, of Auckland Avenue, Darlington. Liz has spent thousands of pounds and many years transforming her garden, including landscaping with stones and garden ornaments.
Tony Justice, a Partner at Landscape Solutions, said: “The entries this year were all of a very high standard, but the Driffield gardeners just edged the others out based on the amount of work they have done to improve it.”
