SUSPICIOUS ACTIVITIES
On the 27/01/2010 at approximately 09.45 hours, Willow Park Road, Wilberfoss, a resident reported that a male attended her home address stating he was selling goods. The male – who was in his early twenties , of scruffy appearance and wearing a beanie hat – He gave as name and showed an ID card. He said that he had to sell things door to door as this was part of him being in a young offender's institution. He wanted to return to his home.
The caller was rightly concerned having heard what this young man had to say and contacted the police with this information and her local neighbourhood watch.
On the 04/02/2010 at approximately 10.00, Darley Close, Stamford Bridge, two males were in the area delivering leaflets advertising their services as a paving company. They approached an elderly resident and offered to make repairs to her driveway. It would seem that a few pebbles were swept to one side and a slushy liquid poured in to crack. A price of between 500 and 850 seems to have been quoted. The standard of work has been assessed as very sub-standard and the resident contacted a neighbour for support. The neighbour contacted the police and they are now making full enquiries into this matter. A white ford transit van was seen.
Please be vigilant for bogus callers and as in this case always inform the police if unsure.
Together We Can Beat The Burglar!
by
Sergeant Peter Rogers
Wolds Weighton Neighbourhood Policing Team
One of the most emotive and distressing offences that can be committed is domestic burglary. The idea of someone entering your home, going through your personal belongings and stealing items (sometimes irreplaceable ones) is one where every effort is made by the police to detect and deter these crimes, to help victims of burglary, and to offer support and advice to stop them becoming victims again.
A couple of weeks ago, I highlighted how the use of the "Onion Principle" in respect of home security could help reduce the chances of you becoming a victim of this despicable crime, and the advice I offered in that article provided a simple system of assessing your home and how secure you are.
Unfortunately this last month has seen several offences of domestic burglary in my area where expensive electrical items such as laptop computers and LCD televisions have been taken. The offences took place overnight in well populated locations with the addresses attacked having holes drilled in double glazed window units to gain entry.
In some cases, these points of entry were at the front of addresses, in locations that would, under normal circumstances be in open view. We know that these burglaries were committed in the early hours of the morning and that they are similar to others committed elsewhere in the East Riding over the last few weeks .
But we think you can help beat the burglars and to stop them committing further offences.
Are you one of those people who has to go out in the early hours on deliveries? Do you take the dog for a very early walk? Do you walk home from the late shift at work in the early hours? If so, we'd like you to be our "eyes and ears".
Police patrols are already checking areas where offences have occurred and we've put out a burglary alert to our local Neighbourhood Watches and in the local press, but we think you can help us too: if you're out and about in the early hours of the morning and you see anything suspicious, please ring the police on 0845 60 60 222 (or 999 if a crime is in progress).
You might see someone who you think is suspicious; you may hear something unusual or see a vehicle acting strangely; you might see something that just seems "odd". Things like this do stand out during the early hours. So if you do witness something like this, give us a ring. We'd rather check out something that ends up being OK than miss something that could have either detected or deterred an offence.
Householders... Please remember to secure your home on a night. If you've got internal window locks on your double glazing, please secure them on a night, but, and this is an important "BUT", make sure that you've got instant access to your keys in case of emergency should you need to get out of your home in a hurry in case of fire.
If you get suspicious or unusual callers during the day, or perhaps see a vehicle in your area whose occupants seem to be looking at addresses, do let us know. If you can safely get a registration number or a make and colour, this can be rally useful and every little bit of information helps! You can also help your neighbours by keeping a a look out on their behalf if they are away.
And finally, if you've got valuable and "state of the art" computer or home entertainment systems or televisions in your home, try and ensure they're not on open view to passers by. In some recent cases, items that have been on open display have attracted offenders.
Domestic burglary rates in the East Riding of Yorkshire are very low. Because of this, offences like those I've described this week do stand out.
Together, however, we can beat the burglar!
