East Yorkshire MP Sir Greg Knight has today welcomed the Department for Transport announcement of £1m in new funding for works to improve safety and traffic flow on the A1079 at Market Weighton.
The Government has said it will release £1m from their ‘pinch-point’ fund for a new four arm roundabout at the A1079 and Holme Road junctions in Market Weighton. This follows a recent meeting between Sir Greg and Transport Minister Robert Goodwill MP to discuss the issue.
The announcement today follows a strong local campaign from Sir Greg, local councillors and Market Weighton residents.
Sir Greg said: “I am delighted that the Government has now been able to provide funding for this project. These works will bring real safety improvements to the junction. They will also lead to a significant improvement in traffic flow around Market Weighton benefiting both local residents and businesses in the East Riding who use the A1079, as queuing and congestion are cut.
Sir Greg commended the Government for introducing the new ‘pinch point funding scheme’ from which the grant is being made.
“This is great news for the area as it will make the road much safer”
The works are expected to start in 2014.
