The assault took place in the Hare and Hounds at Leven, the Crown Court at Hull was told.
Mark Chalkley of South Street, Leven, denied a charge of grievous bodily harm with intent.
But he pleaded guilty to a section 20 offence of inflicting GBH when he appeared before Judge Michael Mettyear on Monday.
Crown barrister Nicholas Adlington said: “It appears there is a history between them.
“The allegation is that he hit Andrew Chalkley with a pool cue with both hands.
“It broke on contact. The injury he received required two stitches.
“There was one blow with the pool cue which had not been broken in advance.”
The attack was on 19 November last year.
Chalkley’s mitigating barrister Stephen Robinson said: “Can I ask for a pre-sentence report in this case?
“I put the Crown on notice that there is reference to a history of bad behaviour on both sides.”
Judge Michael Mettyear told Chalkley to stand as he said: “I am going to adjourn the case for reports for the probation service to interview you.
“It is in your interests that you co-operate with them . You will be back here on 13 February. Between now and then you can have bail on the same terms as before.”
