Local MP congratulates Cranswick on FSA approval

Local MP Graham Stuart has congratulated Cranswick Country Foods after the Food Standards Agency (FSA) found the plant fully compliant with Chinese import requirements for pork products.

Graham visited Cranswick’s site in Preston last November and learned more about the £15 million upgrade to its facilities and how it has gained US Department of Agriculture approval and the ability to export all over Europe.

Since that time, the Beverley and Holderness MP has been determined to see the company get the support it needs to grow its business and develop more export markets around the world.

In the first Prime Minister’s Questions of 2012, Graham called on the PM to celebrate and protect the successful local pig sector. He also met with the chairman of the FSA and arranged follow up meetings with ministers from the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.

The Minister for Agriculture and Food, the Rt Hon Jim Paice MP, wrote to Graham last week confirming that the plant was found to be fully compliant with Chinese import requirements.

The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, the FSA and Cranswick are now collaborating to finalise the necessary report to be submitted to the Chinese authorities. The Chinese government will then decide whether they are willing to approve the plant for export.

Graham said: “I received a letter from the Minister last week informing me of the news and I was absolutely delighted. This is a great result for Cranswick, for the local area, and the British pig industry as a whole.

“Cranswick is a local success story providing much-needed jobs and a market for local pig producers. The company has more than 1,200 employees on the Preston site alone and, now that the FSA has approved the company for Chinese export, I hope the door will be opened for further expansion and job creation.

“I will keep my fingers crossed that the Chinese authorities grant export approval in the very near future and I wish the company the best of luck in this exciting venture.”
