Driffield’s annual late night shopping event, which this year takes place on Thursday December 5, will feature funfair rides on the Cross Hull car park
In light of the great success of the Sensational Saturday Markets, the town team has said it would like to extend the project into this year’s festive event by holding a special Christmas market from George Street to the Brook Street junction from 4pm to 8pm.
This would mean the fair would need to relocate to Cross Hill car park, where it stands in September, as there would be no room on the street for both.
The town team has said it would like to hold a market in the main street because many shopkeepers who do not normally stay open for the late night shopping event have indicated at meetings that they would embrace the new concept if the stalls were in the street adjacent to their shops.
They strongly believe that this would result in a successful late night event.
The town council has increased its budget allocation for the event, which includes the switch on of the Christmas lights, from £1000 to £2000.
Town clerk Mrs Claire Binnington said: “The most magical element of this event is the singing of carold round the street after the lights have been switched on by the mayor.
“It is generally agreed that this should continue as it has always been very successful and empompasses everything that a community Christmas event bshould - children, families, carols, father Christmas and the real meaning of Christmas with the prayers.”
She told town councillors at their fortnightly meeting: “As you are aware I always need plenty of notice for road closures which is why I have been asked to seek permission tand approval from the town council to begin planning the Christmas market.”
