Give us back the Westwood

Dear Editor,

I write in support of your recent correspondent who rightly expressed concern over the treatment being given to the Beverley Westwood, a pasture designated for free public use by the Beverley and East Riding Golf Club.

It would appear the Pasture Masters have little power or control

over the Golf Club, which has gradually poached large swathes of

common land for its own use to the detriment of all others - the majority.

Any non-golfer walking on or near the fairways will be quickly and often sharply reminded that this is golf land and they should not encroach.

The golf course takes up a huge area of land stretching from Burton Bushes to the Walkington road. Surely the course could be condensed into a much smaller, easier to manage space where golfers could be left to do their thing and everyone else could enjoy the freedom of the pasture.

It is time the Pasture Masters grew teeth and stopped this unwanted and probably illegal adoption of public land, the constant degradation of open space, hedgerows and trees in the name of sport.

I also call upon Prof. Barbara English, who has recently called for our pastures and town centre to be better protected, to turn her attentions towards this very issue. If Prof English and others do not act soon, the Westwood will no longer be a safe haven for walkers, unless of course they happen to be chasing after a little white ball!

Come on Professor, it’s up to you.

Mike Singleton
