Final works ahead of big Beverley lights switch-on

AROUND 140 Christmas trees have been erected in Beverley town centre this week, with the assistance of members of the Beverley Rugby League Club.

They have installed the trees outside all the businesses taking part in the scheme to brighten up the town.

Graham Ostler, of Beverley Rugby League Club, which plays at Beverley Leisure Centre, said: "We have helped the Christmas Lights Group for a number of years and we are always grateful for the donation we receive. It goes to helping us run our club."

Tomorrow Beverley Town Council, Beverley Lions and the Beverley Chamber of trade will be working together to switch on the lights throughout the town.

Starting at the Market Cross at 3pm, the Rev Ruth Crompton, Beverley's Methodist circuit superintendent, will hold a short service, with festive songs sung by Molescroft School Choir.

The Mayor of Beverley, Councillor Ken Thorley, and the president of Beverley Lions, Peter Doughty, will switch on the Market Cross lights.

Then townsfolk can follow Bertie Beaver and the Beverley Pipe Band through the town to the Christmas tree at Cross Street, where Beverley actress Eleanor Tomlinson will light up the tree.

The procession will then move to Angel Square, where the Beverley Brass Band will play carols.

When the Angel Square tree has been lit, Beverley Chamber of Trade chairman Philip Guest will present prizes to the winners of the Decorate a Christmas Tree competition.

This year the Beverley Christmas lights committee has worked tirelessly to raise funds to improve the lighting displays within the town.

Committee chairman Councillor Kate Gray said: "This year we have again worked so well together to improve the lighting displays and I can't thank everyone in the team enough for their efforts. We are so looking forward to the lights being switched on."
