Well known businesswoman Karen Guest has been appointed to the board of East Yorkshire medical charity the Daisy Appeal.

Karen, owner of Guest and Philips jewellery which has a shop on Middle Street South, Driffield, took up her position earlier this month.

The Daisy Appeal is funding cutting-edge research into diagnosing cancer, heart disease and dementia quicker, to enable the conditions to be treated more effectively.

It is also raising millions to provide a cyclotron and radio-lab facilities to complement the PET-CT Scanning Centre currently being built at Castle Hill, which will help to save lives across Hull, East Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire.

Karen has been joined by John Hartley, consultant surgeon at Hull Royal Infirmary, who was also appointed to the board in January.

She said she decided to become a trustee after being invited to attend a meeting to find out more about how the charity operates.

“I went along to meet the people involved and was immediately hooked,” she said.

“I felt I really wanted to offer my support to the Daisy Appeal because although I don’t have the medical knowledge that some members of the board do, as a businesswoman I can help in other ways.

“I see my role as helping the charity to grow its profile and raise as much money as possible to help local people.”

Professor Nick Stafford, founder of the Daisy Appeal, welcomed Karen and John to the board, saying they both had a set of skills needed by the charity.

He said: “Karen has a great deal of commercial sense which is invaluable when it comes to fundraising.

“John brings with him many years’ clinical experience and a good understanding of the research, which is fantastic in helping to plan the future direction of the charity.”

The Daisy Appeal is currently searching for volunteers in Beverley, Driffield and Market Weighton who can contribute a small amount of time to help raise funds.

Anyone interested is asked to email fundraiser Nicky Holthuysen at nicky@daisyappeal.org.
