Disbelief at proposals

Dear Sir,

I was dismayed to hear that the Council has decided, despite so much concern being shown by many residents of Beverley and surrounding areas to the contrary, to press ahead with plans to remove most of the setts in Saturday Market.

Most of us who have protested, marched and written do not just do so for the sake of filling our time - we actually care and feel strongly about what is being proposed.

Friends who visit us, and others who used to live in the area and have now moved on, have responded in disbelief when we have told them what is proposed. Sometimes you have to leave an area and look around other parts of the country to realise just what you had on your doorstep, and how special it was.

We need to preserve what we have and ensure that Beverley remains a place where we have something unique and beautiful, and visitors want to come back to. If setts are part of what make places like York, and the Champs Elysees different and attractive, why rip ours out?

Contracts have probably been signed for work to start, and penalty clauses no doubt built in, but hopefully the contractors could be set on to doing something more useful and necessary.

When Saturday Market is empty of either stalls or cars it is a sorry sight to see the crumbling tarmac and uneven surface. Perhaps the contractors could improve that area! A gentleman on a mobility scooter, at one of the protest marches, told me that he has never had a problem with the setts, but finds some of the pavements in the town to be something of a challenge!

The lovely architecture and setts are definitely what raises the market square to a special level. Please let’s keep it that way!

Yours faithfully
