Dentists sign up
MOST NHS dentists in the East Yorkshire and Yorkshire Wolds and Coast areas have accepted the new NHS contracts, according to their primary care trusts (PCTs).
From April 1 the Department of Health introduced new, nationally determined, contractual arrangements for dentists.
The PCTs have been working to reach agreements with dentists in the area within the funding allocated to the PCTs by the Department of Health for NHS dental services. In the East Yorkshire PCT and Yorkshire Wolds and Coast PCT areas, 64 dentists, working at 35 practices, have chosen to agree contracts to provide 315,295 units of dental care, which is the equivalent of securing continued access to NHS dental services for 87 per cent of the patients who were previously receiving NHS dental services.
Health chiefs say 59 dental contracts in the area were offered and a total of 37 contracts have been signed, but the majority of the 22 contracts (22 dentists at 14 practices) that have been rejected are small contracts held by dentists who treat mostly private patients and a relatively small number of NHS patients.
The two PCTs are looking to recruit more dentists across the area and encouraging existing NHS dentists to see more patients using the funds released by those who have chosen to leave the NHS.
Anyone who does not have an NHS dentist and requires emergency or urgent care can access NHS dental services through Dental Access Centres at Hull, Cottingham, Goole, Driffield and Pocklington.
Out of hours emergency dental care is provided in Bridlington, Goole and Hull by contacting 0845 1200086.
