Two teams from East Riding of Yorkshire Council have been shortlisted for prestigious Local Government Chronicle Awards.

The awards recognise achievement and celebrate the best in local government.

The East Riding has been shortlisted in the public health category and for efficiency.

The awards have had a record number of entries this year, and the winners will be announced in March.

The public health category is included for the first time this year, following the transfer of responsibility for public health to local authorities in 2013.

The East Riding entry, entitled Back in the Game, is a description of the team’s impact on the way the East Riding of Yorkshire Council delivers its responsibilities for improving health and wellbeing.

John Skidmore, East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s interim director of corporate strategy and commissioning, said: “I am particularly pleased that the East Riding public health team has been short-listed for this highly regarded Local Government Chronicle Award.

“It reflects well on all the effort and hard work put in by public health staff since moving to the council.

“I believe the work we are doing now, to make East Riding Council the major force behind public health and wellbeing in the local area, is not only being experienced locally but is beginning to be recognised nationally. The public health team, while being a small team, is starting to have a big impact.”

The East Riding entry sets out the opportunities for public health to improve existing council services and bring about improved health and wellbeing for local residents.

The council’s asset strategy team has been shortlisted this year in the efficiency category, having won the energy award the previous year.
