The civic service was held on Sunday 16 February at St Nicholas Church and was led by the Reverend Richard Walker, who spoke passionately about the need to address the issues of poverty and need that present themselves in each new generation or period of office.
He drew on the example of the Queen and the words of commitment she spoke during the Coronation to look after all citizens especially those who fall on hard times.
He commented that it is a call both to the Church and to those in public office to try to address the needs that arise. The music was provided by the Holmechurch Buskers, a group unique to St Nicholas Church, which leads the annual Folk Service and Carol Service there.
The Civic Service was followed by a lunch for 100 guests at the Community Centre, hosted by the members of the Church.
