Chorus to help boost scan appeal
A CAMPAIGN to provide non-surgical cancer treatment in the region is nearing its goal.
The Yorkshire Scan Appeal has spent the last 18 months working to raise the £350,000 needed to buy a Magnetic Resonance Guided-Focussed Ultra-Sonic System (MRgFUS). The system is for the Hull MRI centre to research its use into the non-evasive treatment of breast cancer.
An NHS research project led by Professor Lindsay Turnbull at the University of Hull’s MRI centre demonstrated that MRI detects breast cancer and outline cancer margins more accurately than other ultra-sound or X-ray methods.
Although it was initially thought it would take several years to raise the funds to buy the machine, the Scan Appeal committee now believe they may have the money to buy it by the end of 2011.
With the new system operating along-side current MRI equipment, it is thought it will be possible to rapidly destruct tumours without surgery.
The use of MRgFUS for treating breast cancer is not currently performed in the UK, making it a national first for Hull.
Now, members of the Appeal committee are bringing The London Chorus to perform in the region for the first time to raise further funds.
The Chorus was formed in 1903 as the London Choral Society. It was founded by Arthur Fagge, a contemporary of composer Sir Edward Elgar, to perform Elgar’s The Dream of Gerontius.
The London Chorus will perform at Beverley Minster on Saturday September 17 from 7.30pm. Conducted by Alan Spedding and accompanied by the East Riding Sinfonia, the Chorus will sing Verdi Requiem.
Tickets cost £35 and include a supper box from Cerutti 2. Tickets are available from Jean Van Der Ende by emailing vdeltd@vdeltd.karoo.co.uk, Beverley Tourist Information Centre at 34 Butcher Row, 01482 391672 or from the Box Office on 01964 544145.
