GUESTS packed into a church hall to hear a Welsh choir sing with a local male voice group.

Côr y Gyrlais Male Voice choir, from Ystradgynlais, South Wales, sang to a full house at All Saints Church, Driffield on Saturday 6 October and were joined by the Driffield Male Voice Choir for the three closing numbers, sung in Welsh.

Côr were invited to Driffield by Ross Weekes, who is also from Ystradgynlais, and the choir featured Clive Rowlands, a former Welsh rugby player.

The Welsh choir was supported by local group Ad hoc as well as by two students from Driffield school: harpist Cerys Rees and Sophie Walker on the double bass.

Mr Rowlands said: “Driffield people are wonderfully warm and welcoming. We must ensure that the camaraderie we have established with Driffield folk over this fantastic musical weekend is maintained.”

On Friday 5 October the choir performed at Driffield Rugby Club to a crowd of people, including Driffield Male Voice Choir who joined in to give a sample of Saturday night’s full concert.

Côr secretary Andrew Ingram said: “I just hope that Driffield choirs and supporters will come to Ystradgynlais next year to help us celebrate our 50th Anniversary in some style.”

Chairman of Driffield Male Voice Choir, Clive Hill, said: “To sing with a welsh voice choir is a privilege but they were exceptional. I think everyone thought it was an exceptional evening.”

He said the Driffield choir rose to the challenge of learning three songs in Welsh and were complimented by the Welsh choir, despite only an hour and a half rehearsal together on Saturday.

Côr y Gyrlais was born out of a small group of friends who formed themselves into an entertainment group, performing for local charities and institutions in the Upper Swansea Valley in the late 1950s and early 1960s.

Driffield Male Voice Choir was formed in 1971 and is a registered charity raising money through performances throughout the year.

The Driffield choir welcomes new members and for more information email info@driffieldmalevoicechoir.co.uk.
