Charity challenge
Cycle ps1127-18 Cycleing Adventure Paul Deadman
A BEVERLEY man is hoping a final push will help him reach his fundraising target.
Paul Deadman will jet off next Friday, January 20, to undertake a 400km bike ride from Vietnam to Cambodia.
Mr Deadman is undertaking the challenge in aid of the Brittle Bone Society, a charity close to his heart.
He decided to raise funds for the charity as a way of thanking the organisation for the help and support it provides his teenage step-daughter LuciAnna Michael, who suffers from Osteogenesis Imperfecta (OI), better known as Brittle Bone Disease.
At its most basic definition, Brittle Bone Disease means a person’s bones break very easily. However, it also affects muscles and ligaments and can lead to sight and hearing loss.
Mr Deadman is hoping to raise £2,995 for the charity and has already raised £2,500 towards his total.
As well as generous donations from friends and family, Mr Deadman has raised the funds by holding quiz nights, raffles, doing car boot sales and holding a can collection at Morrison’s.
Although he has been training for several months, Mr Deadman has stepped up his regime over the past two months. Due to work commitments, his cycling training has mostly taken place at night.
“It’s been cold, wet and windy and in complete contrast to what it will be like over there,” he said.
He has so far clocked up around 1,000 training miles and is cycling 150 miles a week. Mr Deadman said he is very much looking forward to the ride.
He said: “I’m still nervous. I’m feeling excitement mixed with trepidation.
“There’s always that worry of have I prepared fully and done enough training and got everything I need,” he added.
Mr Deadman is looking forward to experiencing the different cultures of Vietnam and Cambodia, but added: “It’s a challenge, not a holiday.”
Mr Deadman will fly from Heathrow to Singapore, from there he will fly to Ho Chi Minh in Vietnam where he will begin his cycle.
He will cycle 400km from there to the temples at Angkor Wat in Cambodia, which are considered to be the jewel in Cambodia’s crown.
“It will be a brilliant way to end the ride,” Mr Deadman said.
He is due to fly back to England on January 30.
