Call of the hunt

HUGE crowds watched the Boxing Day meet of the Holderness Hunt as it gathered on Beverley Westwood.

The annual spectacle is, say huntsmen, attracting bigger crowds following the introduction two years ago of the hunting ban.

Joint Master of the Hunt Chris Richardson said the number of supporters at this year’s event may have been a record-breaker, with 105 mounted followers and others on foot.

“There were certainly thousands of people there,” he said.

Although hunting foxes with hounds is banned, the huntsmen say they are continuing to ride out within the law.

“We went for a hack around land between Bishop Burton and Walkington. The Boxing Day meet is really a show day, and we spent half an hour longer at the Westwood than we would normally do to let people look at the horses and hounds,” said Mr Richardson.
