Former Driffield town bus service operator Acklams is about to embark on its busiest year since the company was founded 60 years ago.
The Beverley based company’s 2014 programme is its most extensive to date with 38 holidays taking holidaymakers to destinations throughout the UK and into France and Italy. Significant investment in new vehicles is also on the agenda, with a further £400,000 planned on top of the £408,000 spent in 2013 and £325,000 the previous year.
Director Alan Acklam said: “The next 12 months promise to be not only an adventure for the company’s customers but also for the company and its staff. Bookings and enquiries to date suggest we are heading for a record breaking year as more people choose the coaching option for their weekend or annual breaks.
“To meet this demand, we are continuing to invest heavily in the latest coaches. At present, we have 24 vehicles in the fleet but this will increase over the coming year or so”.
Acklams, which began life in a tiny office in Ladygate, Beverley, as a taxi firm, has become one of the largest independent coaching organisations in the Hull and East Yorkshire region. This year, it is forecasting to carry in excess of 1,200 holidaymakers, double last year’s total, clocking up an estimated 1.1m miles.
Alan said: “Most of our holidays are four or five days but we are also offering a 10-day trip to Tuscany in October. Other highlights include holidays to the Isle of Wight, the Isle of Man, the Lakes District, the Dordogne and a Perthshire Safari.
“One very special addition to the 2014 programme is a tour to Amiens, Chantilly and the Somme Battlefields to mark the 100th anniversary of the start of the Great War. This is such an important date for so many people and we know demand for this trip will be very high”.
Alan added: “Acklams has been operating taxis, buses and coaches for 60 years so we are a very well-known brand in our home region. It’s only in the past two years that we have set out our stall to be one of the leading coaching holiday specialists and we are optimistic that 2014 will see the company break even more records in terms of miles travelled and customer numbers”.
