‘Beverley residents moan at everything’

The above quote is not from me but from a senior member of the East Riding of Yorkshire Council staff, who often comes into the office in which I work, needless to say the person making the quote doesn’t live in our unique historic town.

I joined the ERYC around six years ago and often refer to my place of work as a ‘different world’. The emphasis is on meeting budgets and thinking up completely pointless ideas/projects that will have no benefit to the town at all. Oh sorry, I missed out on the most important policy of the council, UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES MUST WE LISTEN TO WHAT THE PEOPLE OF BEVERLEY WANT OR HAVE TO SAY.

I have lived in Beverley all my life and am at a complete loss as to what is going on around the town. Over the past few weeks I have read some excellent letters sent into the Beverley Guardian from concerned residents, who, like me, have no confidence in the ERYC at all.

Mr Parnaby and his colleagues chose not to attend the planning meeting at the Toll Gavel Church on Friday 7th December, what a surprise!! A chance to put their point of view across, but why would they do that, they will simply go ahead with the plans anyway. I heard that senior managers were told to stay away from the meeting, why would they risk their exorbitant pay cheques!

This complete lack of regard for Beverley is an insult to its residents, anyone with an ounce of common sense would realise that the Flemingate and Grovehill developments will take trade away from the town centre, but when the ERYC have land to sell, Beverley’s future becomes immaterial.

I can’t imagine what the poor shopkeepers are thinking, it certainly saddens me when I drive down North Bar Within and see St Mary’s Court virtually vacant. The Council should be helping these smaller unique businesses in order to make the area vibrant again, what do they do, increase business rates even more and offer no help at all - well done!

The quote from the senior ERYC employee about Beverley residents moaning is in my opinion way off the mark and totally ignorant, all us residents are wanting is the best for our historic town.

When you have seen the ERYC make pointless changes and dismantle it over the years there is going to be obvious concern, but there seems to be little or no chance of changing with Mr Menzies heading up the planning division, (not from this area) and our good reliable leader, Mr Parnaby, I still don’t know what he does really, apart from appear in the local press now and then with a spade in his hand indicating the start of another unnecessary building project in the town.

I just think that these senior council workers are living in a different world to the rest of we Beverley residents as all they seem to want to do is build more and more houses and ruin our unique town, but so long as the money is coming in for these projects they don’t appear bothered - their next job, try and find another small area in Beverley and densely pack it with houses!

I would urge senior council officials to look up the word ‘overcrowded’ as I’m sure that none of them are familiar with the word.

As a lifelong Beverley resident I will look to support any action group where possible, cobbles, housing developments and would encourage all residents to do the same because if we don’t Mr Parnaby and his friends at the council will continue to ruin our unique historic town.
