Beverley number 1 town in UK - survey

BEVERLEY has been named the number one town in the UK to live the good life.

Its affluence, paired with affordability, has earned it the number one spot in a list of UK towns where people can live well without breaking the bank.

Its upmarket restaurants, high-performing schools and attractive housing have afforded Beverley a reputation for being a classy place to live.

Reasonably low living costs mean Beverley is affluent without being exclusive, according to the study carried out for the Royal Bank of Scotland.

The average property price in Beverley stands at 182,000, only 2,000 above the national average, and average earnings come in at around 37,000, making Beverley a well-heeled yet affordable place to reside.

A comment in the report states: "When it comes to affordability it is easy to see why Beverley deserves first place with average property prices just a little over the national average. Average earnings in the town are 37,000 - making this market town extremely attractively-priced relative to the lifestyle it affords."

The study has noted Beverley's excellent education credentials as it is home to the oldest state school in the country, Beverley Grammar, and its sister school, Beverley High, both of which perform well.

The town's selection of high street and boutique-style clothing shops and entertainment facilities also boosted Beverley to the top spot.

The 'Affordable Affluence Index' was compiled following the bank's study identifying the locations across Britain which offer the facilities, services and amenities needed to support an affluent lifestyle combined with affordable property prices and cost of living.

They compared the provision of positive services such as restaurants, cafes and bars with the number of negative factors, such as betting shops and fast food outlets.

Twenty towns make up the list, including Maidstone in Kent, Chester, Perth, Salford in Greater Manchester, Durham and Huddersfield.
