Beverley Minster exhibition of 21st century town trail ideas
THE work of hundreds of schoolchildren who are helping to make their mark on history has gone on show in Beverley Minster.
More than 600 pupils from Beverley's nine primary and three secondary schools have been studying the town's medieval guilds and crafts for the past three months.
Some schools have focused on hatters, music, armourers, spinners and weavers, while others have crafted modern examples of medieval shoes, printing, fabric design, wallpaper and sculptured gargoyles.
The pupils' ideas are being used to inspire the 39 street artworks of the Beverley Medieval Guilds and Crafts Trail, which is due to be completed early in 2010.
But in the meantime, the youngsters' work is on display in the Minster until next Tuesday (April 29).
Tom Martin, Lord Lieutenant of the East Riding and chairman of the Beverley Town Trail, told guests at the opening of the exhibition on Monday that the trail would be an inspiration for both young and old.
Mr Martin said that the project had already harnessed the enthusiasm of the young people whose work is on display.
"Just look at the imagination, the interpretation and the exuberant enthusiasm put into the project by young people whose work will be recognised in the final results," he said.
Beverley High School headteacher Mrs Ruth Vincent, who is a member of the town trail committee, described the exhibition of the students' work as stunning.
She said that the sculptor who will create the artworks for the trail is likely to incorporate some of the ideas into his designs.
"I am really impressed with the ideas that the young people have had. I am particularly thrilled that the staff in the schools have been fantastic, they have entered into the spirit of the trail and it will be a legacy for the town," she said.
Visitors to the exhibition were also impressed with the youngsters' work. "I think it is fantastic. It is a brilliant idea," said Mrs Linda Myers, of Beverley.
Her husband, Peter, added: "I think the trail is going to be really good, and I hope I am one of the first to go round it."
The trail is finally becoming a reality after five years of planning and raising funds by volunteers from all parts of the community.
In 2006 the project was awarded 149,500 from the Heritage Lottery Fund and it is also supported by private and commercial sponsors, East Riding Council, Beverley Town Council and Visit Hull and East Yorkshire.
