A 45-year-old man is to endure the ‘Tough Mudder’ event in order to raise funds for a Driffield boy who suffers from muscular dystrophy.

Andy Wilson is raising money for 13-year-old Ben Hodgson by completing a 12-mile hardcore obstacle course designed to test all round strength, stamina, mental grit and camaraderie on Saturday at the Broughton Hall Estate near Skipton.

Andy said: “I have known Ben all his life and I thought it would be a great way to raise money for such an important cause.”

The Driffield School pupil was diagnosed with muscular dystrophy in 2008. His grandmother, Sue, set up The Ben Hodgson Fund in 2010 to enable the chance for Ben to get the necessary disability equipment Ben and his carers will need such as a specially adapted toilet and wet room. There is also a hope to give Ben as many life experiences as possible.

Andy, who is part of the Driffield Tidy Team, signed up for the race in January and has been training to make sure he can complete the obstacle course. Friends and family have been supporting Andy and they have raised more than £150 with a minimum target of £200 set.

It costs £80 to take part in the event with all the money going to Help The Heroes. Andy also ran the Humber Bridge Half Marathon in June which is more than 13 miles.

Andy said: “As a former member of the army, I feel the entry fee is going to a fantastic cause and it gives me double the reason for doing the event. I did the half marathon in a good time so I believe I’m as ready as I’ll ever be for Saturday though the nerves are starting to creak in.”
