A cut above the rest

Beverley hairdresser Rick Roberts has been selected to be part of the L’Oréal Professionnel ID artist programme.

Led by some of the hairdressing industry’s biggest names, ID artists are coached in the latest catwalk looks, cut and styling techniques, session hairdressing, product innovation and the latest L’Oréal Professionnel seasonal trends.

“It is one of the most sought-after educational opportunities for hairdressers in the UK and Ireland and I was the first one through,” Rick said. “I had to audition and prove that I could be creative with hair so, rather than just doing a standard plait, I needed to show that I could so something with it and mould the hair.”

The programme is for two years and will give Rick the opportunity to work at London and Paris Fashion Week and present at the L’Oreal catwalk showcases. Rick will also be flown to Milan to be given training on session hair with some of the world’s best hairdressers.

“It’s all very exciting. I get to travel across Europe and be taught by some of the biggest names in hairdressing, including Jamie Stevens who does the hair for The X-Factor,” Rick enthused.

Rick used to be an electrician before changing tack 10 years ago and being given his opportunity to be creative, spurred on by his love of all things fashion.

“We get to find out the new fashion styles before anyone else, because L’Oréal’s tag is ‘Hair inspired by fashion’, so they have to know what is coming up in order to design styles to suit,” he said.

Rick was recently selected by the Fellowship of British Hairdressers to present at Salon International in London and at Manchester Professional Hairdressers, in the shooting stars ones to watch for the future team, then again at Salon International in October 2012.

The Rick Roberts artistic team recently showcased their work at the Fellowship of British Hairdressers members’ night and have been ask to show again later on in the year, and this team ethos is something which Rick is very keen to establish.

“Everything I get taught goes straight back to our artistic team, so they will benefit from my training too, which is good,” he confirmed.

Rick established his first salon in Beverley in 2007 and recently opened a second salon in Hull on Princes Avenue. The team is three times L’Oréal Colour Trophy Regional Finalist, Matrix Destination Fame finalist 2011 and part of the L’Oréal evolution and ID artistic teams.
