Setting things right

While I am fully supportive of the Save Our Setts campaign I would like to make one or two points.

The people who carry banners saying: VOTE THEM OUT etc should be very careful, we do not want to vote out councillors who have the interest of Beverley at heart and I noted a number of them at the meeting held in Toll Gravel Church.

There may be some representatives of Beverley who fail to support the electors and I agree that they should not be re-elected but do remember the advice about; babies and bath water!

It is also worth noting that the main opposition to maintaining some historic dignity to the Market Place is the head of environmental services Mr Nigel Laughton.

This is a guy that was given the job to take care of the environment surrounding our town without any election or consultation.

The main and, as far as I can see, only reason that is now given impelling the setts to be removed is because of the problems that they cause disabled people, speaking as a disabled person they have never worried me and I understand that organisations representing disabled people in this area also support retaining the setts. If that is the objection it can be dismissed.

In my view there are only two points to discuss: Does the ERYC want to support and popularize the historic market town of Beverley? And, would people living in or visiting this historic market town prefer to see the Market Place surrounded by a road of old granite setts or a modern construction?

As the answer to the second question is self evident, there is only one question to be answered.

Patrick Nolan,

Market Place.
