Call to councillors
To the Editor,
Re: Article - Historic Yorkshire cobbles ripped up over health and safety fears 10th January 2013.
I take issue with the repeated claims of East Riding Council that Beverley Town Council has been consulted over the proposal to remove the setts from Saturday market. This was put through using underspend as a maintenance project and as such has not been subject to the usual planning and consultation requirements (which has also allowed them to ignore the view of English Heritage that the setts not be removed.)
We have been shown the plans of the contract which we understand has already been let, but our views have not otherwise been actively sought by East Riding whose definition of consultation according to their most recent draft Statement of Community involvement is: “a one-way process between the Council and its customers...It does not involve any two-way process.”
I can only deplore the fact that Beverley is not represented by a single ward councillor on the East Riding Cabinet and I call upon the local ward councillors, particularly those who also sit on the town council, to declare their position on the removal of the setts.
Yours sincerely,
Councillor Margaret Pinder
Beverley Town Council
