Call for action

For 20 months I’ve lived on York Road opposite what my Granddad once told me Vimy Ridge looked like in 1917.

What was going to be “flood defence” and take six months to complete, is now “flood alleviation” and does neither. The shambles is now scheduled to be completed in 18-months and must have cost a fortune. No one complains - it’s the Beverley way.

I understand the Westwood has a group called “The Pasture Masters” who are responsible for its care, but that ERYC claim ownership and neither can agree who should do what.

Living on the front line what I see is, litter, a series of growing, muddy free car parks, a practice area for off roaders, not to mention a drive on for those who park with their tyres buried 10cm into the sodden virgin ground and don’t see a problem.

Whoever the masters of the pasture are and whoever has some say at ERYC should be ashamed, because what’s being allowed to develop is a disgrace.

The arrangements for the Westwood’s upkeep clearly aren’t working, so can I suggest the two groups call a truce, pick up the phone and decide between them on a plan to protect and preserve a unique and beautiful space that deserves better?

And whilst we’re on the subject, another local club that seems content to fiddle and doesn’t smell something burning is Beverley Civic Society.

Right now this town is threatened by an absurd housing target, an ill-conceived relief road and can you believe it, another town centre destroying, retail scheme at Grovehill.

Apart from a recent letter in a local paper “quoting a quote” from 2007 has anyone heard anything of the Civic Society since the early 60’s when it did stuff?

I read somewhere years ago that there are two kinds of people in our world (only two note); talkers and doers. Talkers apparently talk about what they wish they could do and doers shut up and do it.

But doers also actively avoid spending time with talkers. It seems to me poor Beverley desperately needs more D’s and a lot less T’s if it’s to stop the abusers in their tracks.

Adrian Stokes,

York Road
